At first glance of the list of candidates, I have only eliminated one candidate:

  • Gerard Racine – People’s Party of Canada – Too Far Right

I also have reservations with the NDP and the Green Party. The NDP are too in sympathetic to the labour unions and I consider the Green Party to be a 1 issue party that is only focused on the environment.

Personally I detest political parties. I believe that the idea of political parties distract the elected official from voting with their conscience and towards their party’s interests.

On October 10th I emailed all the candidates, that provided an email, with a couple of questions. I only received 1 response.

Dear Candidates:

Before I make my decision on who to vote for, I am emailing all candidates for York South-Weston that provided an email address.

Please answer the following questions without mentioning or disparaging your opponents:

  • What do you hope to accomplish if you get elected?
  • What do you hope to accomplish that will specifically benefit York South-Weston?
  • On what issues do you disagree with your party or party leader?

Regards,

Ross Lewis

Response

Thank you for your email and your thoughtful questions… I particularly like the last one and wish I could see the responses of the other candidates.

There’s a significant amount of detail on our website(s) … www.NickiWard.ca and of course, the Green Party of Canada national plan.

Put plainly, York South – Weston has been badly served by past governments and the symptoms of poverty, lack of economic development and pollution are everywhere. Restoring the quality of life is going to require significant triage – Prioritizing those solutions that are most critical first.

In terms of poverty… Immediate measures to bring sustainable employment to the community.
Economic development… The establishment of a “green” economic development zone.
Pollution – Immediate local measures to restore air and water quality to non-toxic levels.

Unlike the other candidates, ours is not a “whipped” party line. We agree to core principals, but are free to disagree with our leader on issues affecting our constituents.

This is not the case with any of the other candidates – No matter how worthy they are as individuals, they must obey their leader or be thrown out of cabinet and/or the party.

In terms of general style, I am probably considered more of a centrist than others in my party. I have a background in economics and so see our economy and our ecology as deeply connected.

There is a independent debate sponsored by local resident’s associations coming up on October 16th which may help guide your decision and I’ve attached their flyer for your convenience.

Many thanks again for you email and hope to see you at the debate
